The SCROG (Screen of Green) technique is a trellising method that optimizes the yield and quality of various indoor plants. It involves placing a net or grid over the substrate and passing branches through the mesh as they grow. The aim is to create a uniform, dense canopy that receives optimum light at all flowering sites.
Select suitable varieties
Choose varieties with compact growth and rapid flowering, avoiding those that are too vigorous or sensitive to stress. Choose plants with a bushy structure, which will make them easier to manage for CORS.
Prepare the necessary equipment
To set up the SCROG, you'll need a mesh net, also known as a trellis net, made of rope or plastic. Fasten it securely at a height of 20-30 cm above the substrate. Make sure you have scissors, pliers or ties handy to prune and guide branches as they grow.
Apply pruning and training techniques
The key to SCROG is pruning and training. Remove stems and lower branches that don't receive enough light. Regularly pinch or trim the tops of branches to stimulate branching. The aim is to obtain an equal number of branches per plant, which will be judiciously distributed on the net.
Place the plants under the net
Once the plants have reached the appropriate height, place them under the net and pass them through the mesh, pointing them towards the empty spaces in the net. Handle branches with care to avoid damaging them.
Keep the canopy uniform and dense
Continue trellising, passing branches through the net until it is completely full. Be sure to leave about 10 cm of space between each branch for even distribution. Periodically remove any leaves and flowers protruding from the net, to prevent them from shading other parts of the plant. About two weeks after the start of flowering, stop trellising to allow the plants to grow freely.
Harvest and enjoy
Once the flowers are fully formed and fragrant, harvest your plants according to the specific recommendations for each type of plant you're growing. Then dry and store the plants for later use. Thanks to the SCROG technique, you'll be able to obtain homogeneous, abundant harvests, with compact, aroma-rich flowers.
