Growing Lemon balm: a versatile aromatic plant

Lemon balm is an aromatic perennial that adds a touch of lemony freshness to your garden. With its melliferous flowers and fragrant leaves, it offers a multitude of uses in cooking and traditional medicine. Learn how to grow and enjoy this wonderful plant in your own garden.

Description

Lemon balm is a perennial plant that usually reaches a height of around 60 cm. Its white, nectar-rich flowers bloom generously from June to August, attracting bees and other pollinators. The leaves give off a strong, pleasant lemon fragrance, making them versatile in cooking and medicine.

Cultivation

Sowing: Lemon balm seeds can be sown from February to April in nurseries for autumn transplanting. Alternatively, you can sow the seeds in late spring in cool, well-drained soil in a semi-shaded position. Be sure to keep the soil slightly moist until germination.

Care: Lemon balm prefers cool, well-drained soil, and does not appreciate drought or excess humidity. After harvesting, cut back the stems to encourage new growth and extend the harvesting period.

Uses

In the kitchen: Harvest the leaves as you need them to add to fish dishes, salads, sauces or desserts. Their lemony fragrance adds a touch of freshness and aroma to a variety of dishes.

Traditional medicine: Lemon balm is renowned for its many medicinal properties. Use it in infusions, herbal teas or summer drinks for its calming, antispasmodic, stomachic, carminative and sudorific virtues. It can also be rubbed to soothe irritation caused by insect bites.
