La Semence Bio
, is an independent vegetable seed company specializing 100% in organically grown seeds. La Semence Bio is based on a vocation, an ethic, and on the desire to provide farmers and amateurs with vegetable seeds that meet their expectations. Their production methods are rich in ancestral know-how and a good knowledge of the evolution of production techniques.

Description: the Imperial Star artichoke is a round apple. Plant of 1,5 m high and 1 m wide, it is perennial and early. Its taste is soft to slightly sweet.

Family: Asteraceae

Latin name: Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus (L.)

Exposure: sunny, sheltered from the wind.

Weight: 0.5 g

Growing Guide

Soil care: cool, humus-rich, draining soil. Plants produce 3 to 4 artichokes the first year and 6 to 8 the following years.

Sowing: in pots, transplant 2 months later at 80 cm between plants.

Emergence: in 12 days in soil at 20°C.

Watering : regular but not excessive, this could lead to rotting and poor quality of the heads.

Harvest: before the flowers appear and the leaves open.

Preservation: the cooked artichoke oxidizes quickly, it is advised to consume it quickly.

Origin: it seems that the artichoke appeared in Europe at the end of the Middle Ages, and that it is a thistle transformed by selection by the horticulturists. Its culture is mentioned in Northern Italy from the XVth century.

Advice from La Semence Bio®: young artichokes can be eaten raw, the following ones will be steamed. The real leaves, those growing along the stem, which are harvested for medicinal purposes, are also edible (blanched or cooked).
