Product details

Potiron rouge vif d'Étampes: a tasty, productive variety

The bright red Étampes pumpkin is a hardy, vigorous and early variety, producing 1 to 4 fruits per plant, measuring 30 to 50 cm in diameter by 15 to 25 cm in height, and weighing 5 to 15 kg on average. Its thick, orange-yellow flesh is tender and ideal for preparing soups, gratins, purées or jams.

Sowing advice :

Sow in April, in pots in a light location at a minimum temperature of 12°C. Place the seeds on edge and keep the soil moist, but not over-watered, to prevent rotting. Place your pots near a light source for optimum germination.

Growing very early red Étampes pumpkins:

Transplant in a sunny spot in mid-May, spacing them 1 m apart in all directions for non-running varieties, and 1.20 m between rows and 2 m between rows for running varieties. Water regularly and add compost if necessary.

Stimulate growth by pinching the stems, then maintain by hoeing, weeding and mulching to limit weeds and preserve moisture. Water at the base in summer without wetting the foliage.

Beneficial associations :

Avoid planting near potatoes, but combine with beans and cabbage for optimum results.

Common problems and solutions:

Hot weather can lead to a lack of flowers or fruit. Attract pollinators by sowing floral mixes to encourage pollination.
Ensure regular observation to determine the optimum harvest time, based on the corky state of the stalk.

Harvesting and storage:

Harvest between September and November, generally in October before frost. Cut the fruit as close as possible to the stem, leave to dry in the sun for a day, then store in a dry, ventilated place at a temperature between 12 and 20°C for optimum preservation.
