Long English cucumber: growing and harvesting tips for delicious fruit

Long English cucumbers produce delicious, firm, crunchy fruit when picked at 30 cm in length. Here's how to grow them successfully:

Sowing:

Sow in March, April or May in pots, then transplant into healthy, fresh, loose, humus-rich soil when the plants have 3 leaves and frosts are no longer a concern.

Keep plants 60 cm apart, in rows 1.30 m apart.
Choose a warm, sunny spot for optimum growth. Be sure to water regularly.

Tip:

Most cucumber varieties are runners, which means they produce long stems and can take up a lot of space. For small vegetable gardens, you can get around this problem by encouraging your cucumber plants to grow tall, for example by having them climb a wire fence. Help the plants to position themselves on their support; the cucumber tendrils will do the rest. This method gives the fruit better exposure to light, protects it from dirt and makes it easier to harvest. And it works for gherkins too!
