Poivron doux très long des Landes: a Basque culinary treasure
The very long sweet bell pepper from the Landes, an ancient variety native to the Basque country, is a nugget for any gardener who loves authentic flavors.
The long, 15 cm peppers, with their very thin skin, turn a magnificent shade of red when fully ripe. Their exceptional gustatory quality makes them sweet and fragrant, perfect for use in salads or cooked. They are also very popular preserved in oil or vinegar, and play an essential role in the famous piperade, alongside piment d'Espelette, a culinary specialty of the Basque region.
Growing tips
For the best peppers, sowing starts in February/March, in pots of fine potting soil, only 2-3 mm deep, in a greenhouse heated to around 25°C. It's essential to keep the potting soil moist, but not soggy, by watering with a sprayer. Plants can be transplanted to the ground in May, once the risk of frost has passed. Prefer light, aerated soil, spacing them 50 cm apart in all directions, in a warm, sunny spot.
Harvesting peppers
Peppers are harvested around 5-6 months after sowing. Be sure to harvest the fruit when fully ripe to fully enjoy their sweet, delicate flavor.
