Summer Cider tomato growing guide: sowing, care and harvesting tips
Summer Cider Tomato, also known as Summer Cider Apricot, is a mid-season variety prized for its productivity and disease resistance. Its foliage is reminiscent of that of the potato, and it produces large, bright-orange fruits, weighing 300 g on average and up to 600-800 g. Their shape is swollen, flattened and slightly ribbed.
The flesh of the Summer Cider Tomato is bright orange, with a texture reminiscent of mango, both firm and melting. Its exceptional taste is well-balanced, sweet and fragrant, with a hint of acidity. This variety is ideal for use in salads, sauces or coulis, adding a touch of color and flavor to your dishes.

Tomato sowing: practical advice for healthy plants
To obtain vigorous tomato plants, it's essential to follow a few key steps when sowing. From February to April, opt for a warm bed or pots indoors or in a heated greenhouse to ensure a constant temperature of at least 20°C, ideal for germination.
Bury your tomato seeds to a depth of around 1 cm in fine sowing compost and maintain adequate humidity by lightly watering with a sprayer. Place your seedlings near a window for exposure to natural light, to prevent them from stretching in search of light.
Once the risk of frost has passed and the seedlings are between 12 and 15 cm tall, they are ready to be transplanted into the ground. Choose rich, loose, healthy soil, with 70 cm between rows and 50 cm between rows for sunny exposure.
Harvesting tomatoes: ideal timing for a successful harvest
Once you've carefully sown your tomatoes, it's important to know when to harvest the fruit for optimum flavor. In general, allow 4 to 5 months after sowing for the tomatoes to be ready for harvesting*
Preventing tomato diseases
Tomatoes can be prone to a variety of problems, including downy mildew and apical necrosis, also known as "black ass". To prevent downy mildew, especially in rainy regions, it's essential to protect your plants. You can also use a Bordeaux mixture-based treatment.
As for apical necrosis, it's crucial to understand that this is not a disease, but rather a problem linked to a lack of calcium in the soil or irregular watering. Maintaining regular irrigation, making sure to water abundantly once a week, can help prevent this problem and ensure healthy growth for your tomato plants.
