Discover the Tomate Reine des Hâtives: an early variety with dense, sweet flesh
The Tomate Reine des Hâtives is an old variety renowned for its exceptional earliness, with a ripening time of just 42 to 55 days. Its small, flattened red fruits, weighing from 60 to 110 g and with a diameter of 5 to 8 cm, have a discreet yellowish collar and subtle ribbing.
Its dense, sweet flesh makes it a quality choice for a variety of culinary uses. This variety was presented at the 1900 World's Fair as the most productive and earliest of all tomatoes.
Whether in salads, garnishes or preserves, the Tomate Reine des Hâtives offers a unique taste experience, combining freshness and flavor.
To sow the Tomate Reine des Hâtives, proceed as follows:
Sowing: Sow from February to April, either on a warm bed at a temperature of at least 20°C, or in pots indoors or in a heated greenhouse. Make sure the temperature remains constant to allow the seeds to germinate.
Soil preparation: Bury tomato seeds to a depth of about 1 cm in fine sowing compost. Be sure to keep the potting soil moist, but not soggy, by using a sprayer to water lightly.
Location: Place your terrine near a window to ensure a good supply of light, preventing young plants from stretching upwards in search of light.
Transplanting: When frosts are no longer a threat, and the plants have reached a height of 12 to 15 cm, transplant them into rich, loose, healthy soil. Keep a distance of 70 cm between rows and 50 cm between rows, preferably in a sunny position.
Stakes: Before planting in the ground, use stakes to support the tomato plants.
Watering: Water abundantly at the base once a week to keep the soil moist and prevent the development of disease.
To ensure an abundant harvest and avoid the main enemies of tomato cultivation, here are a few tips:
Harvesting: Reine des Hâtives tomatoes can be harvested around 4 to 5 months after sowing, once they have reached full maturity. Be sure to harvest the fruit as soon as it is fully ripe to enjoy its full flavor.
Preventing mildew: To avoid mildew, one of the main problems with tomatoes, it's advisable to protect your plants from frequent rainfall, for example by using shelters or greenhouses. In addition, you can apply a preventive treatment based on Bordeaux mixture, which will help reduce the risk of infection.
Preventing apical necrosis: Apical necrosis, also known as black-bottom, can be prevented by ensuring a regular supply of calcium to tomato plants. Be sure to maintain adequate calcium levels in the soil, and water regularly and abundantly to ensure efficient sap circulation throughout the plant. Consistent watering once a week can help prevent this problem.
