Growing Genovese zucchinis: an early, delicious variety

Genovese zucchini is an early, bushy, non-runner variety, producing light-green fruit mottled with gray. Find out how to grow it successfully to enjoy delicious zucchini in your garden.

It produces early-ripening fruit, ideal for a variety of dishes such as ratatouille, gratin, tian or stuffed zucchinis. Fruits are light green with gray marbling, offering tender, flavorful flesh.

Sowing

Sowing period: Sow in April, in pots placed in a bright spot. Make sure the ambient temperature is at least 12°C, as the seeds need heat to germinate. Place seeds on the edge of the bucket to prevent seed rot.

Watering: Keep the potting soil moist with a sprayer, but take care not to exceed it to avoid seed rot.

Cultivation

Transplanting: Transplant the plants into the ground from mid-May, in a sunny spot at a distance of around 1 m in all directions.

Care: Pinch stems to stimulate plant development. Hoe and weed regularly to eliminate weeds. Mulch the base to limit weed growth and conserve soil moisture.

Watering: Water at the base of the plant in summer, avoiding wetting the foliage.

Good combinations

Avoid potatoes: Avoid planting zucchini near potatoes.

Beans and cabbage: Zucchini appreciates the proximity of beans and cabbage.

Common problems

No flowers or fruit: If your zucchini plant doesn't produce flowers or fruit, it may be due to high temperatures or a lack of pollination. Attract pollinators by sowing floral mixes nearby.

Harvest

Zucchini can be harvested around 2 months after sowing. Pick when young to avoid bitterness.
