Growing the Saint Pierre tomato: abundant and tasty

The Saint Pierre tomato is a vigorous, semi-hardy variety, producing abundant fruit weighing 100-120 g, grouped in bunches of 4-5 until autumn. Its firm, flavorful flesh makes it a popular choice among gardeners. Here's how to grow it successfully:

Sowing

Sowing period: From February to April, sow in warm soil (20°C) or in pots indoors or in a heated greenhouse. Seeds need a constant temperature of at least 20°C to germinate.

Sowing technique: Bury seeds 1 cm deep in fine sowing compost. Keep the soil moist using a sprayer, but be careful not to overwater.

Transplanting and cultivation

Transplanting: Once the plants are 12-15 cm tall and frosts are no longer a threat, transplant them into rich, loose, healthy soil. Keep a distance of 70 cm between rows and 50 cm between rows, in a sunny spot.

Staking: We recommend staking before planting to support the plants.

Gourmet management

Pruning gourmands: Pruning gourmands is not compulsory. You may choose to do so to increase fruit size and earliness, and make harvesting easier. However, it can take time and discernment.

Harvesting

Harvesting period: Saint Pierre tomatoes can be harvested around 4 to 5 months after sowing.

Main problems

Downy mildew and apical necrosis: The main problems encountered with tomato cultivation are downy mildew and apical necrosis. Protect your plants from frequent rain and use Bordeaux mixture-based treatments if necessary. Make sure you also water regularly to avoid apical necrosis caused by irregular watering.
