Product details

Growing eggplant Rotonda Bianca Sfumata di Rosa

The eggplant Rotonda Bianca Sfumata di Rosa is an ancient, hardy and highly productive Italian variety. Its round, white fruits, tinged with lavender pink, measure around 15 cm long and are aesthetically very attractive. The flesh is firm and unctuous, with a mild, sweet flavor.

Sowing time: In March/April, sow in pots of fine sowing compost on a warm bed (constant 25°C) indoors or in a heated greenhouse. Cover the seeds with a few millimetres of potting soil and pack lightly. Place the cups near a window to ensure good light exposure.
Watering: Keep the surface of the potting soil moist, watering lightly if necessary.

Planting

Transplanting: When the young plants are about 15 cm tall, transplant them into the ground at the end of May. Choose a sunny spot with cool, deep, humus-rich soil, spacing them about 50 cm apart in all directions.
Care: Hoe, weed and ridge eggplant plants. Water regularly at the base, and prune plants like tomatoes. Mulch to conserve soil moisture.

Favorable combinations

Eggplants can be grown alongside bush beans.

Harvesting

Harvesting period: Eggplants can be harvested around 5 months after sowing.

Enemies and solutions

Downy mildew: Prevent downy mildew by hoeing regularly and spraying with nettle manure or horsetail tea. Treat with Bordeaux mixture as soon as the first symptoms appear.
Red spider mites: Cut off and burn affected parts. Use black soap or nettle purin as a spray. A pyrethrum-based plant insecticide can also be used.
Beetles: Pick them up by hand.
Aphids: Spray with a solution based on black soap or nettle manure. Use a plant-based biological insecticide in case of heavy attack.
