Cornichon de Bourbonne: productive variety for jam or fresh consumption

Discover Cornichon de Bourbonne, a productive, vigorous variety producing long, fine, crunchy and tasty fruit. Harvest young gherkins to preserve in vinegar, or eat them like more mature cucumbers. Learn how to successfully sow this variety in March/April/May, with tips for successful cultivation and a trick for maximizing space in your vegetable garden.

Cornichon de Bourbonne is a variety renowned for its productivity and vigor. Its long, slender fruits are both crunchy and flavorful, perfect for pickling or eating fresh. Harvest young gherkins for optimum flavor, while more mature fruits can be eaten like cucumbers.

Successful Bourbonne gherkin sowing

To sow Bourbonne gherkins successfully, we recommend sowing in March/April/May in pots, then transplanting to healthy, fresh, loose, humus-rich soil once the plant has developed 3 leaves and frosts are no longer a concern. The recommended spacing is 0.60 m, in rows 1.30 m apart, in a sunny, warm position. Be sure to maintain regular watering to promote plant growth.

Tips for growing gherkins

To maximize space in your vegetable garden, you can encourage your Bourbonne Gherkin plants to grow taller, by having them climb a wire fence or other support. Help the plants to position themselves on their support, and the tendrils will do the rest. This simple, practical method gives the fruit better exposure to light, preventing it from becoming soiled, and makes harvesting much easier.
