Matador spinach: a late variety for a bountiful harvest

Discover Matador spinach, a late variety with broad, thick, dark-green leaves and high productivity. Enjoy them cooked in cream or juice, or eat them raw immediately after harvesting. Learn how to successfully sow Matador spinach from February to May, with tips for successful cultivation, beneficial associations, and tricks to avoid enemies and ensure good preservation.

Matador spinach: a late, productive variety

Matador spinach is a late variety with thick, lanceolate, dark-green foliage, ideal for eating cooked in cream or juice. Its high productivity makes it a popular choice among gardeners. You can also enjoy fresh leaves immediately after harvesting.

Sowing and growing

To sow Matador spinach successfully, we recommend that you sow it from February to May in fresh soil, first loosened with a grelinette. Sow seeds 2 to 3 cm deep, in rows 25 to 30 cm apart. After sowing, gently pack the soil with the back of a rake and water. You can cover the seedling with a forcing veil until it emerges. Be sure to thin plants to 10 cm and weed between rows. Mulching is recommended to avoid competition from weeds. Frequent watering is necessary to prevent the plants from going to seed too quickly, especially in hot weather.

Beneficial associations

Matador spinach enjoys close proximity to peas, beans, cabbage, celery, strawberries, lettuce and chicory, which encourages mutual growth.

Harvesting and storage

Spinach can be harvested around 2 months after sowing. Frequent harvesting stimulates the growth of new leaves. Fresh spinach doesn't keep long, but you can freeze it for later use.

Enemies and prevention

To avoid snails and slugs, place anti-slug traps around your crops. In the event of mildew, take preventive action without using Bordeaux mixture, as spinach leaves do not tolerate copper. To combat defoliating noctuid moths, use a biological treatment based on thurengiensis.
