California Wonder bell pepper: Grow tasty, productive square fruit

The California Wonder bell pepper, also known as the American sweet square, is a productive variety offering square fruits averaging 150 to 200 grams. Their color changes from green to dark red when ripe, offering fragrant, sweet flesh. This versatile bell pepper is ideal for salads, the famous ratatouille, or grilled meats.

Tips for successful bell pepper sowing:

Sow your seeds in February/March in cups of fine potting soil, in a greenhouse heated to around 25°C.
Keep the potting soil moist but not soggy by using a sprayer.
To prevent fungus, sprinkle crushed charcoal over the potting soil.
Place the cups in full light or under a horticultural lamp to prevent the seedlings spinning upwards.
When the seedlings have 2 to 4 true leaves, repot them in larger pots.

Planting and care :

Transplant the seedlings to the garden in May, in light, aerated soil, in a warm, sunny position, spaced 50 cm apart in all directions.
Ensure regular watering and mulching to conserve moisture.
Be careful not to provide too much nitrogen, which would encourage foliage development to the detriment of the fruit.
Peppers require high temperatures for their development, so greenhouse cultivation is recommended in less warm regions.

Harvesting peppers:

Harvest peppers around 5-6 months after sowing to take full advantage of their flavor and texture.
